The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) is Ethiopia’s flagship hydropower project on the Blue Nile (Abay). With a planned generation capacity of approximately 5,150 MW, it is one of the largest hydroelectric schemes in Africa.
GERD is central to Ethiopia’s renewable energy ambitions, poverty reduction goals, and regional economic integration — enabling clean power for domestic industry and households, and potential electricity trade with neighbouring countries.
Financed primarily through domestic resources and public contribution, GERD symbolises national mobilisation for development. The Embassy provides information and updates on the project as part of its public diplomacy work in the United Kingdom.
